Course Description

The Certified Nurse Assisted Program is a 5 week course that is challenging and fast paced. The student will be instructed how to be an effective health care worker to provide safe services with dignity to people in a variety of health care settings. Upon completion of the course, the student is issued a certificate and becomes eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Examination for Certified Nurse Aide.

This is a 5 week program which will consist of Monday through Thursday five hours per day; Day session from 10am to 3pm, evening session from 4pm to 9pm for 4 weeks. The last week will consist of 24 hours of clinical learning experience. Depending on the health status of the community regarding COVID 19 and access into LTC facilities, the 24 hours of clinical learning experiences may be conducted in an alternate manner.

The Nursing Assistant in Long-Term Care

The student will learn how to take care of people in a nursing home setting. Some clients are there for rehab and others for long term care. Students will learn skills to assist with ADL’s, grooming, admissions, discharge and charting. Residents rights, confidentiality and incident reports will be explained.

Foundation of Residence Care

The student will understand the importance of verbal and written communication, describe barriers to communication and list guidelines for communication with residents with specials Needs. They will be able to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to medical emergencies, promote safety and handle non medical emergencies. They will also have the ability to describe and demonstrate infection prevention and control practices.

Understanding Residents

Students will be able to describe and identify basic human needs, holistic care and explain why promoting independence and self care is important, and also identify ways to accommodate cultural differences. Stages of human growth and development, developmental disabilities, and some types of mental health disorders will be discussed. The care of the death and dying along with the role that hospice plays will be discussed..

Body Systems and Related Conditions

All body systems will be explained such as: integumentary, musculoskeletal , nervous, circulatory, respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, reproductive, immune and lymphatic including their related conditions.

Confusion, Dementia, and Alzheimer's Disease

We will explain confusion, delirium, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and communication strategies to aid in understanding clients. Describe interventions for ADL’s and common difficult behaviors related to disease, and creative therapies.

Personal Care Skills

We discuss guidelines for providing skin care and preventing pressure injuries, assisting with bathing, assisting with grooming, toileting and dressing, proper oral hygiene, and safely positioning and moving residents.

Basic Nursing Skills

Each student will demonstrate and have the ability to monitor vital signs, measure height and weight, understand and calculate intake and output. They will be given the skills to identify and prevent unintended weight loss, promote appetite at mealtime, assist with eating, recognize swallowing problems and assist residents with special needs.

Rehabilitaion and Restorative Care

Students will be taught the importance of restorative and rehabilitation care, promoting independence and learning how exercise improves health. They will be able to proficiently demonstrate and explain the use of assistive devices and equipment, maintaining proper body alignment, prosthetic devices care, assist with range of motion and assist with bladder and bowel retraining.

Caring For Yourself

This section will include job finding skills and time management. How to resolve conflict, evaluations and appropriate feedback. We will discuss certification and explain the state’s registry, continuing education and how to manage stress.
